The tool protects, EXPANDS , and STRETCHES the Teflon (Plastic) Lip seal to install the seal. Without the tool you WILL damage the new shaft seal by improperly installing it. The Shaft seal protector is  REQUIRED if you are to install a seal without damaging the new seal. Without the tool how will you expand the Teflon Lip seal to install it?
